Use of computers and the Internet by households and individuals 2009
Statistics Iceland has published the results of its eighth survey on the use of Information and Communications Technology in households and by individuals. Results show that in 2009 92% of Icelandic households had a computer and 90% had access to the Internet. Half of the households had two television sets or more and 48% had a flat screen TV. Broadband connection is also very common at 97%.
Use of computers and the Internet is very widespread among individuals with 93% having used a computer and the Internet in the last three months. Nine out of every ten Internet users send emails, and 78% read online newspapers or magazines. Three out of every four Internet users use the web to obtain information from public authorities’ websites, and a vast majority of those find it easy to find this information.
For the first time since the survey started in 2002 there is a drop in the percentage of people doing Internet commerce. Those who do shop online are not as likely to buy travel tickets and accommodation as in previous years.
This issue contains an overview of the main results. More data and breakdowns can be found on Statistics Iceland‘s website.
