Fewer graduates at the upper secondary level and more at the tertiary level in 2010-2011

Fewer graduates from vocational programmes at the upper secondary level
A total of 5,584 students graduated from the upper secondary level of education with 6,218 graduations during the school year 2010-2011. This is a reduction of 201 graduates from the previous year, or by 3.5%. Females were more numerous than males or 53.8% of graduates. The decrease was caused by fewer graduations from vocational programmes in 2010-2011 than in the previous year, a reduction of 362 graduates to 2,957 (10.9%). A considerable part of the decrease lies in fewer graduations with the journeyman’s examination. They were 560, a decrease from 644 in the previous year. Males were almost 80% of those completing the journeyman’s examination.

Graduated masters of a certified trade were 188, 13 more than in the previous school year (7.4% increase). Males were 69.7% of trade masters, and one out of four graduates was 40 years old or older when graduating.

Never before have more students completed the matriculation examination
There were 3,232 graduates from 34 schools with a matriculation exam during the 2010-2011 school year, 67 more than in the previous year (2.1% increase). The ratio of students graduating with the matriculation exam to 20 year olds in the population has never been higher and increased considerably from the previous year; from 63.6% to 69.2%. Women were 57.2% of those completing the matriculation exam.

Never before have more students graduated from the tertiary level of education
There were 4,281 graduates with 4,322 graduations at the tertiary level of education in 2010-2011. Almost 65% of graduates were females. The number of graduates at the tertiary level increased by 4.8% from the previous year. Never before have more students completed a master’s degree in one school year, a total of 1,181 graduates. The number of graduates completing a diploma after a Bachelor degree increased by 18.2%, to 527.

More Ph.D. graduates than ever before

More than one out of every four Ph.D. graduates was 40 years old or older when graduating and three out of four were 30 years old or older. More than one out of every three Ph.D. graduates in 2010-2011 was a foreign citizen, a total of 17 graduates.
