Population in Iceland numbered 290,570 by 31 December 2003 according to the National registry. Population increase between 31 December 2002 and 31 December 2003 was 0.7 per cent. The growth was most pronounced in the Capital region (höfuðborgarsvæði), where population increased by 1.1 per cent. The proportion of the population living in this part of the country has increased dramatically during the 20th century and currently almost two thirds of the entire population of Iceland lives in the Capital region (62.3 per cent).
