According to the National registry population in Iceland numbered 299,891 by 31 December 2005. Population increase between 31 December 2004 and 31 December 2005 was 2.2% as compared to 1.0% one year earlier. Even though natural increase is high in Iceland as compared to most other European societies, the increase in 2005 is to a large extent to be explained by an increase in net migration.
