Registered students at the upper secondary and tertiary level in autumn 2009
In autumn 2009 there were 48,706 students enrolled. The number of registered students increased by 1.5% at the upper secondary level since 2008, while at the tertiary level the increase was 5.5%. The main reason is a large increase in the number of students in distance learning programmes at the tertiary level.

In autumn 2009 there were 42,929 pupils in compulsory education in Iceland. In addition there were 89 pupils attending the 5 year old grade in 5 schools. The number of pupils has decreased by 582 since the previous school year, or by 1.3%. More
