Enterprises

Statistics Iceland produces data from the Enterprise Register,  which is maintained by the Internal Revenue Directorate, where information on all enterprises, institutions and organizations are recorded. By year-end 2003 a total of 46,000 ID-numbers had been registered at the Enterprise Register. Information on the number of enterprises and new registrations are among the data processed from the register. Furthermore Statistics Iceland uses information from the income tax register in order to obtain information on  wage payers, including self employed individuals.

Turnover

The figures show the enterprises turnover according to VAT data submitted to the tax authorities bi-monthly. The tax is excluded from the figures. In most cases the data is enterprise oriented which means that enterprises operating in more than one activity are delivering one return to the tax authorities. The tables emphasizes comparative changes from the previous year. Therefore enterprises are excluded if  the turnover is estimated by the tax authorities.

Financial accounts of enterprises

Statistics Iceland compiles statistics over financial accounts of enterprises. The data is derived from the Enterprise Accounts Register but from 1997 onwards it has been compulsory for incorporated enterprises to return standardized annual accounts to the tax authorities. Some activities are immuned from the standardized form, like financial institutions and public utilities. In such cases Statistics Iceland has added these activities to the Register. The total coverage of the Register is very high, exceeding 90% of the total industrial activity, in recent years.
