Agriculture
Statistics Iceland has compiled statistics on agriculture since 2011. Three units cooperate on the project; Price Unit, National Accounts Unit and Unit of Business Statistics. The collected data come from other institutes, associations, enterprises and directly from farmers.
Livestock
The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority take a livestock census twice a year. In the autumn farmers are required to return a report on their livestock count and in the spring representatives of the authorities visit all farms for inspecting fodder supplies and counting livestock. Data from registers of the Farmers Association of Iceland and expert estimates are also used.
Animal products
Reports from abattoirs on their activity and registers of the Farmers Association are used for compiling statistics on slaughtering as well as information from the animal identification system database.
Information on hatching of eggs is collected from hatcheries and data on production of milk and dairy products are collected from dairies.
Crops and land use
Once a year farmers hand in a report on fodder crops to the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. Results from the Farm structure survey are used as well and in some cases the amount of imported seeds is used to estimate the size of the cultivated area.
Data on the production of tomatoes, cucumbers and capsicum come from the Farmers Association of Iceland. Information on production of other vegetables, potatoes and swedes is collected directly from the producers.
The farm structure survey was conducted on all units with registered activity in the field of agriculture, in the beginning of 2011. Since the farm structure survey was a census the results offer a complete coverage for Icelandic agriculture. Statistical methods were applied in adjusting for non-responses when the appropriate information could not be obtained from other authorities. It is expected that the survey will be conducted as a sample survey regularly, but the census done every ten years.
Economic accounts for agriculture
The Economic Accounts for Agriculture (EAA) are prepared by the National Accounts department and are mainly based on the quantity and price data, along with additional information gathered as necessary. The EAA follow, for the most part, national accounts standards and give information about the total production value of the agricultural industry, its use of inputs, the value added, along with data on investment and depreciation.
