Population 1 December 2009

The population of Iceland was 317,593 on 1 December 2009. This is a decrease of 0.7% from previous year. The population of the East region decreased by 3.3% from previous year. The decrease in population is mostly due to lower number of foreign citizens. The number of these was 3,099 lower in December 2009 compared to 1 December 2008.

On 1 December the number of persons, 16 years and older, affiliated to the Lutheran Evangelical Church of Iceland was 194,903, compared to 195,576 on 1 December 2008.
