Local government elections were held 26 May 2018. The total number of municipalities was 72, two less than in the previous elections of 2014. Sixteen municipalities, where 1% of the total number of individuals on the electoral roll resided, had direct voting, while 56 municipalities, with 99% of individuals of the electoral roll, had proportional voting where 198 candidate lists were presented. Thereof one list was elected without a ballot as it was unopposed in the respective municipality.

In April 2019, value of exported goods in BOP* was estimated 51,200 million ISK and value of imported goods was estimated 65,400 million.
The landed catch of Icelandic vessels in May 2019 was 122,166 thousand tonnes which is a 13% decrease from May 2018.

In the 1st quarter of 2019, the financial balance of the general government (i.e. the central government, the social security funds and the local governments) amounted to 3.4 billion ISK in deficit or 0.5% of quarterly GDP.
The number of tourists coming to Iceland was approximately 111 thousand in May and reduced by 24% compared to with the same month last year when it was 148 thousand.
