The number of household petrol cars has decreased since 2018. Meanwhile, the number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles has grown rapidly.
In August 2025, the number of registered vehicles in Iceland was 355 thousand. Thereof, 267 thousand were registered to individuals or households, or 75.2% of the total.
Electric and plug-in cars were 61,290 with 46,927 in households, or 77% of the total.
