The enrolment rate at the tertiary level decreased slightly between 2024 and 2025 according to Statistics Iceland‘s new data on education enrolment. The largest decrease among men was observed among 25-year-olds, where the enrolment rate fell from 13.7% in 2024 to 10.8% in 2025. Among women, the largest decrease was among 26-year-olds , from 20.7% to 18.0%.

The enrolment rate at the tertiary level continued to be highest among young people aged 19–25. Among women, the enrolment rate was highest among 21-year-old women, at 38.2% in 2025 compared with 39.8% the previous year. Among men, enrolment was also highest among 21-year-olds, at 22.7% in 2025 compared with 25.1% in 2024.

The enrolment rate was higher among women than men in all age groups. The largest gender difference was observed among 22-year-olds, where enrolment was 37.0% among women compared with only 20.9% among men.

The enrolment rate remained highest among individuals domiciled in Reykjavík and the Capital Region outside Reykjavík where the average enrolment rate 18.9%, compared with 12.6% outside the Capital Region. Outside the Capital Region, the lowest enrolment rate was among individuals domiciled in South of Iceland, at 9.8%, while the highest rate was among those domiciled in the North of Iceland, at 15.0%.
