Iceland's domestic material consumption (DMC) totaled 6,312 kilotons in 2024, representing a 1,857-kiloton decrease from the previous year. This equates to 16.4 tons per capita, compared with a three-year average of 17-19 tons per person.
Material consumption serves as a key indicator used by the United Nations to assess environmental pressure and natural resource utilization across countries, forming part of the SDG-12.2 sustainability indicator. Construction materials and road-building stone account for the largest portion of total material consumption.
