The value of exported goods from Iceland amounted to 82 billion ISK fob in November 2023 and the value of imported goods 110.8 billion ISK cif (104.8 billion ISK fob) according to preliminary figures. Thus, there was a trade deficit, calculated on fob/cif value, of 28.8 billion ISK as compared with a trade deficit of 38.2 billion ISK in November 2022 at current rates of exchange.

The trade balance in November 2023 was therefore 9.4 billion ISK more favourable than during the same period last year. For the last 12 months the deficit in balance of trade in goods was 379.2 billion ISK or 72.7 billion ISK less favourable than during the previous 12 months.

Value of exported goods decreased by 4% for the last 12 months
The value of exported goods in November was 3.3 billion ISK (4%) higher than in November 2022, increasing from 78.7 billion ISK to 82 billion ISK.

For the last 12 months, the total value of exported goods was 940.6 billion ISK or 39.2 billion ISK lower (4%) than during the previous 12 months at current rates of exchange. Manufacturing products contributed 55% of the total exports, their value decreased by 8%. Marine products contributed 37% of total exported goods and their value increased by 1% compared with the previous 12 months.

Value of imports increased by 3% for the last 12 months
The value of imports of goods was 110.8 billion ISK in November 2023 compared with 116.9 billion ISK in November 2022. The decrease was thus 6.2 billion ISK from November 2022 (5%). The value of capital goods (except for transport) was 25.9 billion ISK and decreased by 3 billion (10%), the value of industrial supplies was 27.9 billion ISK and decreased by 1.4 billion ISK (5%), and the value of fuels and lubricants was 14.9 billion ISK, decreasing by 0.3 billion ISK (2%) from November 2022.

For the last 12 months, the total value of imports of goods was 1,319.8 billion ISK, 33.5 billion ISK higher (3%) than during the previous 12 months. For big categories the biggest difference is increased value of capital goods, transport equipment and food and beverages.

The average value of the exchange rate index for the 12 months period was 195.4, indicating a 3% weaker rate of exchange than during the previous 12 months when the average exchange rate index was 189.7. The exchange rate weakened by 0.8% in November 2023 (197.5) compared with November 2022 (196.0).
