NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 02 NOVEMBER 2021

The population of Iceland at the end of the third quarter 2021 was 374,830, 192,210 males and 182,620 females. There were 55 gender neutrals, but due to the small size of the group they are still counted among men and women. The population increased by 3,260 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the Capital region were 240,050 and 134,780 lived in others regions.

A total of 1,310 children were born in the third quarter and 580 persons died. This is the highest number of births in any quarter since the beginning of quarterly series publications in January 2010. Net migration was 2,530 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 340, and 2,190 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.

Sweden was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 190 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 560 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 330 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 1,000 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (350).

Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 600 out of 900, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 720 out of 3,200. Romania came second with 230 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 54,140 (14.4% of the total population in Iceland) by the end of the third quarter 2021.
