The harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) in the European Economic Area in January 2026 decreased by 0.3% from the previous month. In one year, the index has increased by 2.0%.
Base update and transition to COICOP 2018
The HICP is, as of January 2026, calculated and published in accordance with the COICOP 2018 classification system, which is a new version of the system previously used for the classification of household consumption expenditure (ECOICOP). Due to this change, the index is now published with a new base year, 2025 = 100.
As some changes affect the subindices, new tables for them have been published. These tables include data for 2016–2025 but the figures are estimates of what the weights/indices would have been if COICOP2018 had been used in their compilation.
The old tables remain accessible under Earlier tables.
Further information on the base update can be found in a memorandum below.
