NEWS RELEASE SOCIAL AFFAIRS 01 MARCH 2023

In December 2021, there were just over 53 thousand old-age pension beneficiaries which is an increase of 3.7% from the previous year. Of these, just over 25 thousand were men and almost 28 thousand were women.

In December 2021, about 65% of people aged 60 and older received old-age pension, but this proportion has been between 60 and 65% since 2007. The percentage varies per age group, though. The largest rise has been in the age group, 65 to 66 years. Old-age pensioners in that age group made up over 40% of the population in 2021, but in 2007 the proportions were only 25%.

Relatively more persons received payment only from the Pension Funds in December 2021, compared with the years 2007 and 2014.

Statistics Iceland publishes information on the number of pensioners in December each year. The information covers the years 2007 to 2021. This includes old-age, disability and rehabilitation pension as well as disability allowance by payers, that is the national basic pension and pension from occupational compulsory pension fund, without double counting.

In this edition, residence has been revised and is now more accurate than before and data from previous years has been updated.
