In August 2022, there were 1,472,200 overnight stays in Iceland which exceeds August in all previous years. Foreign overnight stays were 81% thereof, or 1,188,200, which is 70% increase from the previous year (699,900). Domestic overnight stays were 284,000 which is a 16% decrease from the previous year. Overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses were 829,500, thereof 597,800 in hotels, while 642,700 were in other types of accommodation (apartments, cottages, campsites etc.).

There were 597,800 overnight stays in hotels in August, characterised by an increase in all regions from August 2021. Foreign overnight stays at hotels were 492,300 or 82% of overnight stays at hotels while the Icelandic overnights were 105,500 (18%). Foreign overnight stays increased by 54% between years while the Icelandic decreased by 12%.

In the 12-month period from September 2021 to August 2022, the number of overnight stays in hotels was 4,244,800, which is almost a triple increase from the prior 12-month period. There was a marked increase in all regions.

The number of hotel bedrooms increased by 14% in August 2022 compared with August the year before. Occupancy rate for hotel rooms was 88.6%, which is an increase of 13.1 percentage points from August 2021.

All numbers for 2022 are preliminary, except for hotel data which is preliminary for August 2022. Due to abrupt changes in supply and occupancy rates, estimation for other types of accommodation than hotels is currently subject to a higher degree of uncertainty than usual and should therefore be taken with a special precaution until final numbers are available.
