So far this year overnight stays are 7,860,000 which is an 79% increase between years and a 3% increase from 2018 when they were 7,506,800.

In October 2022, there were 715,500 overnight stays in Iceland which is a 33% increase between years. Foreign overnight stays were 80% thereof, or 570,600, which is a 44% increase from the previous year (396,800). Domestic overnight stays were 144,900 which is a 2% increase from the previous year. Overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses were 560,000, thereof 469,900 in hotels while 155,500 were in other types of accommodation (apartments, cottages, campsites etc.).

There were 469,900 overnight stays in hotels in October, characterised by an increase in all regions from October 2021. Foreign overnight stays at hotels were 379,500 or 81% of overnight stays at hotels while the Icelandic overnights were 90,400 (19%). Foreign overnight stays increased by 43% between years while the Icelandic overnight stays decreased by 4%.

In the 12-month period from November 2021 to October 2022, the number of overnight stays in hotels was 4,483,000, which is more than a double increase from the prior 12-month period. There was a marked increase in all regions.

The number of hotel bedrooms increased by 5% in October 2022 compared with October the year before. Occupancy rate for hotel rooms was 73.1%, which is an increase of 11.3 percentage points from October 2021.

All numbers for 2022 are preliminary, except for hotel data which is preliminary for October 2022. Due to abrupt changes in supply and occupancy rates, estimation for other types of accommodation than hotels is currently subject to a higher degree of uncertainty than usual and should therefore be taken with a special precaution until final numbers are available.
