NEWS RELEASE TOURISM 31 JANUARY 2017

The total expenditure of inbound tourists of tourists was roughly 263 billion ISK in 2015 compared with 197 billion ISK in 2014. The share of air passenger transport services in total expenditure of inbound tourists has declined for the past few years, from 28.9% in 2009 to 21.9% in 2015. At the same time, the share of accommodation services had increased from 18.8% in 2009 to 21.3% in 2015.

The number of inbound tourists increased by 27% in the year 2015 compared with the year before. In 2015 the total number of inbound tourists was 1.587.071. The number of excursionists or cruise ship passengers increased by 18% in 2015 and were in total 297.946. The number of tourists or overnight visitors was 1.289.125, an increase of 29%.

These statistics are part of the new publication for the Tourism satellite accounts which has been updated partially for the years 2014 and 2015 and are accessible on the website of Statistics Iceland. Additional tables will be updated soon, such as tables containing data on the expenditure of domestic tourists and the output of tourism industries.

This compilation of Tourism satellite accounts has been conducted by Statistics Iceland in order to rigorously calculate the contribution of tourism to the Icelandic economy, based on international standards in tourism statistics. In 2015 Statistics Iceland published data for the year 2013. This time selected tables are published simultaneously for the years 2014 and 2015. The emphasis is on the expenditure of inbound tourists as well as number of tourists and overnights.
