NEWS RELEASE TOURISM 18 AUGUST 2022

Register based employment in the tourism industries in Iceland was 29,067 in May 2022, an increase of 62% compared with May 2021. In the 12-month period from June 2021 to May 2022, an average of 24,701 people worked in the tourism industry compared with 17,440 in the previous 12-month period.

Overnight stays in hotels in June are approximately 496,000 compared with 190,616 in June 2021. The number of overnight stays by Icelanders were 91,338 (+9%) and the number of overnight stays by foreign guests were 404,962 (+280%).

Revenue from non-Icelandic tourists during the second quarter of 2022 was just under 115 billion ISK compared with the same period last year when it was 29.6 billion ISK. Revenue from non-Icelandic tourists has increased by 332% in the last 12 months when compared with the same period the year before, from 79 billion ISK to 332.5 billion ISK.

In July, there were 299,473 departures of passengers from Keflavik airport compared with 140,972 in July 2021. Departures of passengers with foreign citizenship were 234,190 compared with 109,935 in July 2021.

This release includes updated statistics on overnight stays, register based employment and revenue from non-Icelandic tourists. Also updated are statistics on rental cars from the Icelandic Transport Authority, passengers count by nationality from the Icelandic Tourist Board and passengers’ statistics through Keflavik Airport along with traffic statistics published by ISAVIA.

Data from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has not been updated due to measuring device failure. Statistics Iceland no longer provides initial estimates of overnight stays for the latest month.
