NEWS RELEASE TOURISM 17 AUGUST 2023

Employment in the tourism industries in Iceland was 35,233 in June 2023, an increase of 11% compared with June 2022. In the 12-month period from July 2022 to June 2023, an average of 30,908 individuals worked in the tourism industry compared with 25,665 in the previous 12-month period.

Overnight stays in hotels in June 2023 were 510,698 compared with 495,477 in June the year before. The number of overnight stays by Icelanders were 91,485 (+/- 0%) and the number of overnight stays by foreign guests were 419,213 (+4%).

In July, there were 345,917 departures of passengers from Keflavik airport compared with 299,473 in July 2022. Departures of passengers with foreign citizenship were 275,291 compared with 234,189 a year earlier.

This release includes updated statistics on overnight stays and register based employment. Also updated are statistics on rental cars from the Icelandic Transport Authority, traffic statistics from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, passengers count by nationality from the Icelandic Tourist Board and passengers’ statistics through Keflavik Airport along with traffic statistics published by ISAVIA.

Statistics Iceland no longer provides initial estimates of overnight stays for the latest month.
