Census 2011: Institutional households and the homeless

According to the Icelandic population census on 31 December 2011, 7,471 persons lived in institutional households, 2.4% of the total population. The institutional populations mainly consisted of the elderly, with 3,853 persons living in institutions for the elderly, while 2,545 were residents of student housing facilities. 812 lived in institutions for persons with disabilities, and 261 in other types of institutions.
