On 1 January 2021, Statistics Iceland conducted a census in Iceland using a new method. The
census is based entirely on administrative records and data held by Statistics Iceland. The census
is a part of a cross-European effort, taken in accordance with laws and regulations established in
the European Economic Area. Therefore, its results can be compared with censuses in other
countries.
This publication describes the main characteristics of the census. The results of the census will be
released in stages and Statistics Iceland plans the releases on a monthly basis, by subject area,
before mid-year 2023.
