On 1 January 2012 the population of Iceland was 319,575, compared with 318,452 1 January 2011. Although increasing, the population growth of 0.4% was historically low. This is due to negative net migration in 2011, just barely outweighed by the natural population growth (births less deaths). The population has nevertheless grown in the past five years by an annual average growth rate of 1.2%. Live births in Iceland were 4,496, 2,327 boys and 2,169 girls, and 1,985 persons died, 998 men and 987 women.
