Statistics Iceland has been working on revising the housing part of the consumer price index for some time. The method of simple user costs, which has been used to estimate the imputed rent, has generally proven successful considering long-term trends. In the short term, however, there have been deviations that can usually be attributed to developments in the financial market, which have had a significant impact on the imputed rent. It is the opinion of Statistics Iceland that these deviations are too significant to justify the unchanged method.
