          In the year 2004 just over 207 billion ISK were spent on social protection in Iceland. The expenditure that year as percentage of GDP was 22.6% but was 18.0% in 1994. The largest proportion of social protection expenditure function was on sickness/health care which gives Iceland a unique place in European comparison.
